Riveting with A Toggle-Aire® Press

AIM Joraco® was approached by a reputable badge manufacture who were looking to attach clasps onto their tag holder pockets with their rivet. In addition to a press able to install the rivets they were interested in an automated rivet feeder system. Using our TOGGLE-AIRE® 1530 with a feeder bowl and track, AIM Joraco® created an efficient, easy to use system to install rivets that eliminated the need for manual loading.

The Process

The application required a riveting press that could consistently position each fastener while eliminating the need for operators to load individual rivets by hand. It also needed to accommodate the customer’s existing hollow rivets with tooling and a guide rail matched to their dimensions. Because the small rivets were prone to movement, accurate feeding and alignment were essential.

Our engineers developed a customized solution built around the TOGGLE-AIRE® 1530. The tooling to install the rivets included a base rolling tool and a spring-loaded drive punch made from hardened, heat-treated tool steel for long operating life. To eliminate manual loading the system used an automatic bowl feeder and custom guide track to deliver each rivet to the working position, where a retention finger held it securely until the operator activates the press. An adjustable stop roller and accessible adjustment screw allow precise calibration of the rivet location. A custom fixture was also used for holding the parts being riveted, keeping the clasp and pocket positioning consistent relative to the rivet head.

Results

AIM-Joraco® addressed this application by customizing an existing press platform around the customer's rivets and components. The result was a coordinated feeding, positioning, and forming system. The customized system provided a consistent flow of correctly aligned rivets and eliminated the need to manually load each fastener.

The guide rails kept the rivets positioned for delivery, and the retention finger held them in place before activation. The custom fixture supported easy, repeatable placement of the clasp and pocket. Accessible location adjustments and adjustable shut height also made tooling calibration more convenient, giving the operator a practical way to maintain the intended setup.
